Saranac Lake Placid, NY – June 20, 2017
As part of its mission to educate the local community about healthy lifestyles and physical activity, Can-Am Rugby Tournament in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid has teamed up with Haka Rugby Global (HRG) to bring a Haka Rugby Camp to the tournament for the first time. The inaugural camp will take place July 28-29 in Lake Placid, NY.
The Can-Am Rugby Tournament Camp joins a list of 30 locations in 22 countries. Haka Rugby Global teaches rugby skills, team building, hand to eye coordination and sportsmanship to over 2000 children around the world.
Boys and girls ages 6-18 will get to learn the traditions and culture surrounding the world famous Haka, while being coached by professional rugby players and former stars of the mighty New Zealand All Blacks. All the coaches have played at the highest level of rugby around the world.
Camps start off with a Powhiri, welcoming both children and parents. Throughout the week, children learn the haka, waiata, karakia, and maori protocols. On the final day, they will take part in a tournament and perform a powhiri for their parents and families before enjoying a kai (dinner). Register for Haka Rugby Global Camp.
“Our experience of hosting previous camps shows that parents are blown away by the response from their children. They learn a discipline and respect like never before and find their children have grown in a short space of time,” explains Troy Nathan, CO Founder and Professional Rugby Player at Haka Rugby Global. “Kids with behavioral issues tend to become more mannered and their parents really appreciate the positive impact that performing the haka and waiata as one and team environment have on their children. Our vision is to use rugby and Maori culture as a tool to develop future world leaders. We don’t just want to develop rugby players, we want to help grow them into young men and women.”
Haka Rugby Camp will provide a rugby experience that enhances the players’ basic rugby skills, complementing and strengthening their regular team training in a positive, fun environment. Players will learn or improve fundamental skills required to succeed in rugby with a major focus on tackling technique and team play. This camp will benefit any child taking part in team sports.
The coaching will focus on:
- Hand-eye coordination
- Balance and spatial awareness
- Speed, fitness, strength
- Safe tackling techniques
- Ruck Defense
- Tackle ball & post tackle
Nutrition and good food choices, strength and conditioning, and injury prevention, as well as spring and cross-training will also be covered. Lunch and snacks will be catered each day and an H2O hydration station will be provided. Participants with specific dietary requirements or allergies will be provided with a separate menu.
All participants will receive an HRG black training tee by Mizuno, HRG black training shorts, and a HRG boot bag.
